In India after the dreadful end of Mughal Empire in 1857 the very
first Islamic intellectual reformist revolution rose in the North
Indian town of Deoband. Hujjat al-Islam al-Imam Muhammad Qasim
Nanawtawi established Darul Uloom Deoband on May 30, 1866. Those who
helped him in his mission were Haji Abid Husain and Imam Rabbani
Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and others. At Deoband Imam Muhammad Qasim
Nanawtawi reinstated the great intellectual legacy of Imam Shah Wali
Allah of Delhi. Imam Qasim Nanawtawi’s Darul Uloom Deoband became
most prestigious seat of learning in Islamic Religious Sciences in
Asia . In 1982 the legacy of Shah Wali Allah and Imam Muhammad Qasim
Nanawatwi was protected by Hakimul Islam Mohammad Tayyab (Rector of
Darul Uloom Deoband 1929-1983) in form of present Darul Uloom
Deoband Waqf.
